- Fortified wine (dry to sweet)
Grapes of Marsala
Sicily's historic fortified wine, produced around the western port city of the same name.
Marsala is a fortified wine from western Sicily, created in the late 18th century and once as celebrated as Sherry or Madeira. It is made mainly from local white grapes — Grillo, Catarratto, and Inzolia — fortified with grape spirit and aged, developing nutty, caramelized, and dried-fruit character.
It ranges from dry aperitif styles to rich sweet versions, and is graded by color and aging. Though much of its modern reputation rests on cooking, top traditional Marsala is a serious and complex wine in its own right.
Production is recorded by region, not by appellation.
