Grapes of Alto Adige
A cool alpine region in Italy's far north, prized above all for its precise, aromatic white wines.
Alto Adige (Südtirol) sits in the mountainous north of Italy, bordering Austria, and its culture and viticulture reflect that crossroads. High-altitude vineyards and large day-to-night temperature swings preserve acidity and aromatic intensity, making this one of Italy's finest white-wine regions.
Pinot Grigio here bears no resemblance to the neutral mass-market style — it is textured and precise — while Gewürztraminer, whose name traces to the local village of Tramin, is intensely floral and spicy. The region also makes appealing reds from the native Schiava and the darker, structured Lagrein.
Production is recorded by region, not by appellation.
