- Dry, powerful, age-worthy red (Sangiovese)
Grapes of Brunello di Montalcino
A powerful, long-lived Tuscan red made entirely from a local strain of Sangiovese around the hilltop town of Montalcino.
Montalcino sits in southern Tuscany, warmer and drier than the Chianti heartland to its north. Here Sangiovese — known locally as Brunello — ripens fully and yields wines of exceptional concentration and structure.
Brunello is aged for years in barrel and bottle before release, developing dried cherry, leather, dried herbs, and earthy depth over a firm tannic backbone. It is among Italy's most age-worthy reds, with top vintages capable of decades in the cellar.
Production is recorded by region, not by appellation.
