Grapes of Bolgheri
The coastal Tuscan zone that made Bordeaux grapes famous in Italy, home of the original "Super Tuscans."
Bolgheri lies on the Tuscan coast, cooled by sea breezes and warmed by Mediterranean light. Unlike inland Tuscany's devotion to Sangiovese, Bolgheri built its reputation on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc — the grapes of Bordeaux — planted here from the mid-20th century in defiance of local tradition.
The resulting wines, initially sold as humble table wine because they broke the rules, became known as Super Tuscans and reshaped Italy's fine-wine map. Ripe, polished, and structured, they combine Mediterranean warmth with Bordeaux's blending logic.
