Wine production in Bulgaria has ancient roots, with Thracian tribes cultivating vines as early as 4000 BCE. The country was a major wine exporter during the Soviet era, and after the fall of communism, the industry underwent significant privatization and modernization. Bulgaria is known for its indigenous Mavrud and Melnik grape varieties, alongside international varieties grown in regions like the Thracian Valley.
