Wines of Brazil

Wine production in Brazil began in the 16th century with Portuguese colonists, but the modern industry took shape with Italian immigrants settling in the Serra Gaúcha region of Rio Grande do Sul in the late 19th century. Brazil is the largest wine producer in South America after Argentina and Chile, known for its sparkling wines and increasingly for still wines from varieties like Merlot and Chardonnay.
