The benchmark for traditional-method sparkling wine, built on chalk soils and the cool northern climate that keeps its base wines razor-sharp.
Champagne is the coldest of France's major wine regions, and that marginal climate is the point: grapes ripen slowly and retain the bright acidity essential to great sparkling wine. Beneath the vineyards lies deep chalk, which drains well, reflects light, and lends the wines their characteristic mineral cut.
Most Champagne blends three grapes — Chardonnay for finesse and freshness, Pinot Noir for body and structure, and Meunier for fruit and approachability — often across multiple villages and vintages. The defining second fermentation happens in the bottle, and extended aging on the lees builds the toasty, biscuity complexity that distinguishes Champagne from sparkling wines made elsewhere.
The region's grands crus and premiers crus are ranked by village, and styles range from crisp Blanc de Blancs to fuller Blanc de Noirs and delicate rosés.
